How to Transfer Contacts Between Phones the Easy Way (2026)

Two smartphones side by side on a table ready to sync data

Short answer: The easiest way to move contacts is to sync them to a cloud account first. Save contacts to your Google account on Android or iCloud on iPhone, then sign in to that same account on the new phone and they appear automatically. For everything else, export a vCard (.vcf) file and import it.

Every time I set up a new phone the very first thing I want back is my contacts. Years ago this meant fiddly SIM copies and desktop software. These days I almost never touch a cable. Here are the modern methods I actually use, ranked from easiest to most manual.

Method 1: Google account sync (best for Android)

If your contacts are saved to your Google account rather than the phone itself, switching Android phones is basically automatic.

  1. On the old phone, open Settings > Accounts > Google and confirm Contacts sync is on.
  2. Wait a minute for the sync to finish, or tap the three-dot menu and choose Sync now.
  3. On the new phone, sign in with the same Google account during setup.
  4. Your contacts download automatically within a couple of minutes.

To double-check everything is safely in the cloud, visit contacts.google.com in any browser. If your people are all listed there, you are covered.

Method 2: iCloud sync (best for iPhone)

For iPhone to iPhone the equivalent is iCloud.

  1. On the old iPhone, go to Settings > [your name] > iCloud and turn on Contacts.
  2. On the new iPhone, sign in with the same Apple ID and enable Contacts sync.

Apple's Quick Start also copies contacts along with everything else when you hold a new iPhone next to the old one during setup.

Method 3: Export a vCard (.vcf) file (works everywhere)

This is my go-to when moving between different ecosystems, like Android to iPhone or vice versa. A vCard is a universal contacts file that almost every phone and email service understands.

Export from Google Contacts

  1. Open contacts.google.com.
  2. Click Export in the left menu, choose vCard, and download the file.

Export from iPhone / iCloud

  1. Go to icloud.com/contacts and sign in.
  2. Select all contacts, click the settings gear, and choose Export vCard.

Import the file

On the new phone, email the .vcf file to yourself and open it, or import it directly at contacts.google.com or icloud.com. The phone offers to add every contact in one go.

Method 4: Cross-platform helper apps

When someone in my family switches sides, I reach for the official migration apps. Google's Google Drive backup on iPhone copies contacts to a Google account, and Apple offers Move to iOS for Android-to-iPhone jumps.

The old SIM trick still has a use

If you are moving to a basic feature phone or the target device has no cloud support, copying contacts to the SIM card still works. Be aware it saves only names and numbers, not photos, emails, or notes, and it is capped at a few hundred entries.

A non-obvious tip

Before you migrate, spend two minutes cleaning up. In Google Contacts there is a Merge and fix option that finds duplicates and suggests merges. Doing this once before the move means you do not carry three copies of the same person onto your shiny new phone. I run it every single time and my address book has never been tidier.

Frequently asked questions

What is the easiest way to move contacts to a new Android phone?

Make sure your contacts are synced to your Google account on the old phone, then sign in to the same Google account on the new phone during setup. They appear automatically, no cable or computer needed.

How do I move contacts from Android to iPhone?

Use Apple's Move to iOS app during iPhone setup, or export a vCard from contacts.google.com and import it on the iPhone. Both keep names, numbers, and email addresses intact.

Will I lose contact photos or notes when transferring?

Cloud sync and vCard export preserve photos, emails, and notes. The only method that strips them down to just names and numbers is the old SIM card copy.

Where can I check that my contacts are backed up?

For Google, visit contacts.google.com. For Apple, visit icloud.com/contacts. If your contacts are listed there, they are safely in the cloud and will follow you to any new device.
